Course Description:

This course will introduce participants to concepts and practice of research in development studies,  related to both rural and urban settings. We will explore research concepts and how they can be put into practice in real-life settings where it is required to formulate research questions, research approaches and plans, gather data, conduct fieldwork and organise findings into coherent reports and papers.

The course is structured as a workshop and colloquium. Topics will include approaches, case studies, and issues related to development and change in (Western) China. An emphasis will be on case studies and approaches related to the development of agricultural areas, of resettlement projects, and of issues linked to urbanisation. Special attention will be given to development related to tourism, because tourism plays a key role in Chinese development planning specifically in rural areas.

A wide range of different teaching methods will be used. We will give short lectures as introductions to the various topics. There will be lots of open discussion, and occasionally, we will also read key texts (in English) together. An important part of the course will be the discussion of real-life research projects. Partly, material for this will come from our (the facilitators’) practice, but we also explicitly invite you, the participants, to come forward with material from projects (i.e. thesis or similar) you are currently working on, and discuss this with us - this process can give you a lot of guidance and new ideas on how to proceed with your projects. This structure is meant to foster your abilities to develop your own research projects, to participate in academic debate in English, to read complex English texts in the field of the social sciences (development studies, tourism studies, and related disciplines), and to understand a range of concepts and practices applied in these fields.

Who is this course for?

Everybody is welcome to this course. We particularly welcome students of the Faculty of Social Development and Western China Development Studies (all years), and the School of Tourism.

The course will be run in English. You should have the ability to follow the presentations that we will give in English. We will adapt our way of speaking to your abilities as well as we can.
